Grade 6 Digital Design: Page Layout

About this Unit

Students utilise the Design Cycle, engaging in a dynamic process of investigation, ideation, development, creation, and evaluation to produce a visually compelling double-page magazine layout that promotes a travel destination responsibly and creatively. They develop their understanding of how visual communication can influence audience perception, shape cultural connections, and promote ethical and sustainable tourism. As an extension task in Visual Arts, students also apply their page layout and graphic design skills to create double-page spreads that document and communicate their own creative processes within that discipline. Students thus gain insight into how layout serves both commercial and reflective artistic purposes. Students also acquire the skills needed to complete the following tasks:

Investigate

  • Research tourism destinations, identifying key attractions, cultural heritage, and environmental considerations.
  • Analyse existing magazine layouts to understand how typography, layout, colour, and imagery communicate mood, identity, and audience appeal.
  • Explore how design strengthens cultural understanding and promotes responsible travel behaviour.

Develop Ideas

  • Generate creative concepts for magazine spreads that tell a visual story and evoke emotional engagement.
  • Formulate inquiry questions such as “How can design persuade a traveller to value sustainability?” or “In what ways can layout influence cultural perception?”
  • Experiment with layout sketches, colour schemes, and narrative approaches using graphic design software.

Create the Solution

  • Produce a double-page magazine spread using professional layout techniques, integrating headlines, subheadings, images, QR codes or digital interactive elements.
  • Apply principles of visual hierarchy, balance, and alignment to organise information clearly and persuasively.
  • Refine the design through peer and teacher feedback to enhance clarity, aesthetic appeal, and ethical impact.

Evaluate

  • Present the final magazine spread to an audience, explaining design decisions and the ethical considerations around cultural representation and sustainable tourism.
  • Reflect on how the final design communicates effectively with the target audience and promotes responsible travel choices.
  • Assess strengths and areas for improvement in the design process, demonstrating growth in both technical skills and conceptual understanding.
