Grade 10 Digital Design: Logos

About this Unit

Students utilise the Design Cycle to explore how logos communicate identity, values, and purpose for individuals and organisations. Engaging with key concepts of Identity, Communication, and Creativity, they analyse how visual symbols can influence perception, build community, and strengthen brand identity. Through research, ideation, creation, and evaluation, students develop their own logos for school teams or organisations, using graphic design tools and creative thinking to communicate meaning clearly and effectively.

Investigate

  • Research existing logos from school teams, businesses, and organisations, analysing how design elements such as colour, shape, typography, and symbolism communicate identity and values.
  • Explore how logos function as visual tools for recognition, unity, and representation across different cultural and social contexts.
  • Formulate inquiry questions such as “How do logos communicate values?” and “What makes a logo memorable and effective?”

Develop Ideas

  • Brainstorm creative concepts through sketching, mind-mapping, and symbolism exploration.
  • Experiment with visual elements to convey personality, ethos, and audience connection.
  • Explore cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in design decision-making.
  • Generate multiple design iterations to reflect the evolving identity of the organisation or team.

Create the Solution

  • Use digital design tools to refine and produce a final logo that is aesthetically effective, scalable, and memorable.
  • Apply principles of graphic design such as simplicity, balance, contrast, and unity.
  • Prepare logo mock-ups across different applications, such as uniforms, digital platforms, and merchandise.

Evaluate

  • Present the final logo to peers or a target audience, explaining how the visual elements communicate identity and values.
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of the design in terms of clarity, cultural impact, and audience engagement.
  • Evaluate the creative process and suggest improvements or future applications.
